Northwell claims to be all about raising health, but it seems like they are more about raising wealth—for their executives. Whether it’s big paydays for corporate executives who mostly sit behind desks, or aggressive debt collection practices that squeeze the patients who can least afford to pay, Northwell is really earning the name Northwealth.
Northwell Health CEO Michael Dowling made $7.7 million dollars in 2021 in salary, bonus and perks.1 That’s more than 95 times the average salary of a healthcare worker at Peconic Bay Medical Center, who are some of the lowest paid healthcare professionals on Long Island!
In 2022, Northwell spent approximately $41.5 million on advertising and promotion.2 On Long Island, Northwell ads are inescapable on TV, radio, billboards, and stadiums. Nurses and healthcare professionals wish Northwell prioritized investing in quality care as much as their public image.
Northwell Health is at the top of the list of executive compensation payouts in New York State. In 2020 as the pandemic raged, Northwell ranked #2 in salary, bonuses and perks to execs and top doctors with $32.3 million paid out.3
While nearly every other hospital in New York State suspended lawsuits against patients with unpaid medical bills during the height of the pandemic, Northwell continued to sue over 2,500 patients. As The New York Times reported, “The Northwell lawsuits each sought an average of $1,700 in unpaid bills, plus large interest payments. They hit teachers, construction workers, grocery store employees and others, including some who had lost work in the pandemic or gotten sick themselves.”4
