A Weekly Update for NYSNA Members   |   June 20, 2025

Dear NYSNA Member

NYSNA Celebrates Juneteenth!

NYSNA commemorates Juneteenth and honors all who fought to abolish slavery in the United States. Last weekend, NYSNA nurses proudly marched in Buffalo’s Juneteenth parade to commemorate this national holiday. NYSNA members recognize that the fight to end racism and win health equity for all New Yorkers is far from over. This is why NYSNA members throughout New York continue to organize to have Juneteenth recognized in their contracts as a premium holiday. It is also why we are fighting cuts to our public and safety-net hospitals, because these disproportionately impact Black New Yorkers, perpetuate systemic racism and worsen health disparities in our healthcare system.

AROUND THE UNION

NYSNA Continues to Get Out the Vote!

This week, NYSNA was out in force knocking on doors to get New Yorkers out to vote for pro-labor champions. We were out for Jenn Puja for Westchester County Legislator, and NYSNA joined the New York City Central Labor Council and our labor siblings from RWDSU/UFCW Local 338 and 32BJSEIU to knock on doors for candidates for New York City Council Kevin Riley, Mercedes Narcisse, Alexa Aviles, Shahana Hanif and Pierina Sanchez. NYSNA members also joined a rally in support of New York City Comptroller candidate Justice Brannan.

You can still help elect NYSNA champions who will make a difference in the lives of nurses, healthcare workers and our patients! Help us build political power for our union and make sure we elect pro-worker, pro-healthcare representatives to office so we can hold employers and special interests accountable. Sign up for phone banking or door-knocking and check out the flyer here.

NYSNA Continues to Speak Out Against Federal Healthcare Cuts

This week, NYSNA nurses joined a town hall meeting at One Brooklyn Health/Brookdale Hospital in Brooklyn with Congress Member Hakeem Jeffries and an in-district meeting in West Nyack alongside NYSUT, NYS AFL-CIO, 1199/SEIU, and the Hudson Valley Area Labor Federation with Congress Member Mike Lawler to speak out against the Medicaid cuts and other critical programs that Congress is considering right now. The cuts the Senate hopes to pass before July 4 would make even deeper cuts to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act. NYSNA Treasurer Margaret Franks, RN, BSN, along with other Rockland County Center Labor Council union leaders emphasized that Medicaid and other healthcare cuts would decimate New Yorkers’ access to care, hospital funding, healthcare jobs and New York’s economy.

The fight to stop the cuts continues on Monday, June 23. Join NYSNA nurses,1199/SEIU healthcare workers, labor, and community allies at rallies across New York to stop Medicaid cuts at NYP Columbia, NYP Methodist, Mt. Sinai Main, Wyckoff, Interfaith, Brooklyn Hospital, RUMC, Northwell-Peconic Bay, Monte Nyack, and Columbia Memorial-AMC. All will take place during lunchbreak starting at 12 p.m. Please join your NYSNA and 1199 colleagues in front of the main entrance of your facility on your break or if you have the day off!

NYNSA Nurses Win DAISY Awards!

On June 10, NYSNA nurses Alice Frimpong, RN, Kristle Simms-Murphy FNP, PMHNP, and Cheryl Robinson, RN, were recognized with The DAISY Award at NYC Health+Hospitals/Jacobi Medical Center. The program celebrates nurses for their extraordinary, compassionate and skillful care and acknowledges nurses who go above and beyond in providing patient care. The DAISY Foundation, which administers the award, was created in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died from complications of an autoimmune disease. Congratulations, NYSNA nurses, on this recognition!

CVPH Recognized as Recovery-Friendly Workplace With SPAN Award

With the launch of the Statewide Peer Assistance for Nurses’ (SPAN) Campaign for Compassion, SPAN is committed to honoring organizations and individuals making significant strides in creating recovery-friendly work environments. Among the many inspiring participants, University of Vermont-Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital (CVPH) stood out as an exemplary leader, committed to supporting employee wellness and recovery. SPAN awarded CVPH a Recovery-Friendly Workplace Award on June 13 for its efforts.

During the event, SPAN highlighted how CVPH has taken proactive steps to foster a culture of understanding, support and resources for all employees facing any issues with substance use disorder (SUD). CVPH’s dedication benefits its employees and sets a powerful precedent for other organizations to follow. Substance use disorder affects approximately 10% of the workforce at some point in their careers, contributing to increased absenteeism and decreased productivity. CVPH’s initiatives, such as fair chance employment by prioritizing skills and qualifications over a candidate’s history of SUD or recovery status and reasonable return to work accommodations, support the successful workplace integration or reintegration of staff in recovery from SUD. CVPH also reviewed its substance use policies, demonstrating how organizations can positively influence this landscape by promoting recovery, reducing stigma and prioritizing mental health.

NYSNA recognizes Sarah Newtown, RN, and NYSNA program representative, for her essential role in getting the project off the ground. If your facility is interested in learning how to lead with compassion and becoming a recovery-friendly workplace, contact SPAN at SPAN Helpline: 800-457-7261 or SPAN@nysna.org or by visiting www.statewidepeerassistance.org.

NYSNA also commends the passage of the Recovery Ready Workplace Act in the New York State Assembly and Senate. This proposal takes a critical step toward addressing addiction by empowering New York’s employers to become active partners in supporting recovery.

NYSNA Nurses Celebrate Juneteenth

NYSNA Nurses from Erie County Medical Center and Terrace View Long-Term Care marched and danced with family and friends in the 2025 Buffalo Juneteenth parade last Saturday, June 14. This annual event commemorates the abolition of slavery and celebrates African American history, culture, and freedom.

Nurses also celebrated Juneteenth at Erie County Youth Detention Center on June 19. Youth detention/correction nurses offer healing and treat their young patients with dignity and humanity during some of the most difficult moments of a young person's life.

SOLIDARITY IN ACTION

Your Rights and Advocate for Patients When Encountering ICE

Nurses’ first duty is to care for and advocate for our patients. NYSNA nurses care for all New Yorkers regardless of immigration status, income or insurance status, race, religion, ability or disability, sexuality, or gender identity or expression — simply regardless. Read our statement regarding the federal policy change on immigration enforcement in “sensitive locations,” including hospitals and schools.

Our allies at the New York Immigration Coalition developed this toolkit to provide a comprehensive list of resources for community members, partners and allies who work with immigrants. The toolkit covers health, community safety, family resources, financial empowerment and more.

Learn your rights and get answers to frequently asked questions here to know what to do if you encounter ICE officers in your facility.

NYSNA has also prepared this list of legal resources related to immigration. Please review and share widely.

On Tuesday, June 17, New York City Comptroller and mayoral candidate Brad Lander was violently arrested while asking ICE agents to see a judicial warrant for an immigrant at a Manhattan immigration court. Lander was released that evening, but his unlawful arrest as well as the arrest of Newark mayor Ras Baraka last month show that ICE agents are using unlawful tactics even against elected officials. NYSNA released a statement calling on Lander’s release and condemning these ICE tactics. It is more important than ever for nurses to stay informed about their and our patients’ rights.

Federal Court Hears Arguments in Lawsuit That Federal Workers’ Unions Brought, Alleging Retaliation and Union Busting

Labor unions, including National Nurses United (NNU), presented their argument for a preliminary injunction against the Trump administration at the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California on Wednesday, June 18. The unions, which also include American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), National Association of Government Employees (NAGE-SEIU), National Federation of Federal Employees (NFFE), and Service Employees International Union (SEIU), filed a lawsuit on April 3, alleging that the Trump administration violated the law when it issued an executive order aimed at stripping more than 1 million federal workers of their union rights in retaliation for opposing its policies.

“We know this administration wants to bust our unions, demoralize workers and destroy the [Veterans Affairs] to privatize veterans’ health care. But nurses are fierce defenders of decency and healthcare, and we will not allow these punitive actions to silence us,” said NYNSA President Nancy Hagans, RN, BSN, CCRN. “We will fight to ensure that we keep our promise to veterans to care for them as they put their lives on the line for us.”

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

Effective Jan. 1: Prenatal Rights Under New York State Law

Recent changes to New York state employment law help working parents better navigate work and family and require hospitals to better accommodate registered nurses’ medical and family needs. Effective Jan. 1, 2025, New York has become the first state in the U.S. to require paid prenatal care leave, impacting all private employers. This comes not long after the June 2024 change that requires public and private employers to provide a minimum of a 30-minute paid break for employees to pump breast milk. Learn more about these rights in our updated NYSNA fact sheet and the New York State FAQs

Nurses’ Rights to Be Whistleblowers and Protest Your Assignments

NYSNA members should be empowered with the knowledge of laws that have been passed with NYSNA’s input to protect them and empower them to speak up when patient safety is compromised, either due to unsafe staffing or other factors, such as a lack of personal protective equipment, as was the case throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

Take a moment to learn about your rights in this flyer.
