On Friday, Aug. 22, Ellis Medicine closed a number of units and most surgical services at Bellevue Woman's Center. Despite initially announcing these cuts would take place in December, Ellis dramatically moved up the timeline, leaving the community with little time to respond and making it harder to access essential maternal and child health services.
Shifting surgical services from Bellevue to Ellis Hospital's main campus does nothing to improve healthcare services in the capital region, puts patients at risk, and forces the community to rely on a chronically understaffed hospital with an already-overworked nursing staff.
At a time when healthcare services—including women's reproductive health services and Medicaid—are under attack at the federal level, New York State must fight to defend women's health and safe, quality patient care. Join nurses, community advocates, and allies in demanding that Ellis Medicine protect women's healthcare and restore surgical services at Bellevue Woman's Center!
